In an effort to help bridge the digital divide in their communities, Hotwire Communications, Truist, and Dell partnered together to enable Empowering Communities Foundation, Hotwire’s charitable organization, to launch The Home Page Program to bring free high-speed internet, laptops and literacy tools to three low-income communities without broadband. Since its inception, The Home Page Program has brought these vital tools to over 2100 students and their families in unserved communities in Philadelphia, North Carolina and South Florida, including those who live in the South Dade Migrant Community.
Empowering Communities Foundation, supported by funding from the Truist Foundation, is bringing high-speed internet to the families of the nearly 400 children and students in the South Dade Migrant Community by utilizing Hotwire Communication’s engineering and construction teams to develop and build community-wide, 5G broadband. The South Dade Migrant Community will receive ongoing technical support from a dedicated team ready to assist their needs 24x7x365.
Over the course of three days beginning October 1st at the community’s main facility, every child and student was provided with a Connection Kit, consisting of personalized backpacks containing laptops and other fun and essential school equipment, including notebooks, headphones, stickers, water bottles and a pencil pouch. Additionally, students received training in beginner computer skills and access to The Home Page Program website, a site that aggregates school content and access to online learning tools, like WORD Force – a free literacy program sponsored by Truist.
“Our core value at Hotwire Communications is that communities are empowered through access to broadband,” said Jonathan Bullock, EVP of Corporate Development at Hotwire Communications and VP/Director of Empowering Communities Foundation. “The Empowering Communities Foundation allows us to expand our community to include those who have been left without access to the internet, including the South Dade Migrant Community. Everyone at Hotwire, Truist and Dell whose hard work made rapid delivery of high-speed internet and laptops during a pandemic possible, is looking forward to seeing the many things the students in Homestead and in the other connected communities are able to accomplish.”
“By providing internet access, laptops, and training in computer skills, The Home Page Program is helping each student gain the computer literacy skills they need to excel academically today, and better prepare them to thrive later in life,” said David Ramos, Hotwire’s EVP/GM for South Florida. “None of this would have been possible without contributions from our community, employees and the essential support provided by the Miami Dade Public School’s Superintendent, Board, Information Technology team, as well as Shane R. White and the Homestead Housing Authority, and Monica Lauzurique of the La Salle Educational Center.”
