Hotwire Communications partnered with the town of Highlands, North Carolina to bring the power of 100% fiber-optic technology to residents and businesses in the region. The town of Highlands conducted a town board meeting where commissioners unanimously voted to accept Hotwire Communications’ contract as the closed system provider of the town’s broadband highway known as Highlands Smart Cities Network, following building the infrastructure highway which lasted seven years from inception to completion. The development of the Highlands Smart Cities Fiber Optic System was a tremendous effort put forth by the Highlands community.

HIGHLIGHTS

About 18% of neighborhoods in Highlands have underground utilities and the fiber will have to be underground in those areas.

Within three years, underground portions of the network will be built where needed if customers continue to commit to Hotwire Communications’ services.
For residential customers, Hotwire Communications offers Internet up to 10 Gigabits, along with packages that include voice, television, home automation, and home security.

THE CHALLENGE

The development of the Highlands Smart Cities Fiber Optic System was an incredibly long and major effort, lasting seven years from inception to completion, including building the infrastructure highway, choosing a provider, and finalizing a contract that the town of Highlands agreed upon. For the residents throughout the community, including staff, commissioners, attorneys, and building experts, the construction of the infrastructure was deemed a learning experience that led to the adjustment of strategies, rethinking of plans, and the occurrence of unforeseen changes.

OUR SOLUTION

The town board members and Highlands commissioner chose Hotwire Communications to lease the highway from the town, guaranteeing to provide the town with over 25 years, which greatly exceeded the town’s existing loan with an additional interest fee through their previous provider. Hotwire Communications’ investment and willingness to serve the community of Highlands was demonstrated by their determination to bring their extensive services to Highlands, along with a mutually beneficial relationship.
